Atlas Mountain Trekking

From the Atlantic coast of Tamraght to the roof of North Africa — 4,167m Jbel Toubkal. Three epic routes, all departing from our doorstep.

From the Ocean to the Summit

Atlaseia's trekking expeditions begin where the Atlantic waves break at Tamraght and end at the highest point in North Africa. No two landscapes in Morocco could be more different — or more complementary. Our local Amazigh mountain guides have walked these trails for generations and know every hidden valley, Berber village and secret spring along the way.

Begin at sea level in Tamraght and journey south into the raw Anti-Atlas — a landscape of ochre rock formations, hidden palm oases, and ancient Amazigh villages untouched by mass tourism. Sleep in a family-run gite in Tiout, explore the famous Tafraout painted boulders, and return via the Ameln Valley. The most cultural and accessible of our three routes.

Ascend to the Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,489m) for panoramic views of the Toubkal massif. Two nights in traditional mountain gites with Amazigh family hosts.

Tiout Oasis
Secret Oasis
Tiout Palm Oasis & Ancient Agadir
A 1,000-hectare hidden palm oasis in the Anti-Atlas whose name means "camel's hump" in Tifinagh. Visit the ancient fortified Amazigh granary above the village — a UNESCO-listed heritage site almost no tourists find. Date palms, argan trees and carob shade a village barely changed in 500 years.
📍 Anti-Atlas · 2h from Tamraght
Taliouine Saffron
Amazigh Heritage
Taliouine — Morocco's Saffron Capital
The Souss-Massa produces some of the world's finest saffron, harvested by Amazigh women in October and November. Visit a cooperative, walk the saffron fields at sunrise, learn the ancient harvesting ritual and share a saffron-infused meal with the cooperative's families. A rare, deeply moving experience.
📍 Taliouine · 3h from Tamraght
Souss Massa National Park
Wild Nature
Souss-Massa National Park — Northern Bald Ibis
One of the world's rarest birds — the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis — nests only here and in a handful of other sites globally. Dawn kayak and guided birdwatching through the Oued Massa estuary cliffs. Flamingos, herons, hoopoes and jackals also frequent this remarkable coastal wilderness park.
📍 Oued Massa · 45min from Tamraght
Ameln Valley
Hidden Valley
Ameln Valley — 26 Amazigh Villages
A spectacular valley beneath the Jbel Lkest massif near Tafraout, home to 26 traditional Amazigh villages where almond trees blossom pink in February and where women still weave traditional textiles on hand looms. Walk village to village with a local guide, visit an argan oil cooperative and sleep in a heritage riad.
📍 Tafraout · 2.5h from Tamraght
Aglou
Virgin Coast
Aglou & Sidi R'bat — The Secret Coastline
South of Agadir, the Atlantic coast becomes completely wild. Aglou's troglodyte fishermen's caves, carved by hand into the cliffs centuries ago, are still used today. Sidi R'bat marks the southern edge of the Souss-Massa Park — flamingos wade at the estuary, dunes rise behind the beach, and not a tourist in sight.
📍 Aglou · 1.5h from Tamraght
Taroudant
Living Heritage
Taroudant — The Grandmother of Marrakech
Taroudant's 16th-century ochre ramparts enclose one of Morocco's most authentic medinas — without the tourist pressure of Marrakech. Artisan souks where craftsmen still produce traditional Amazigh jewellery, leather and textiles. Walk the full 7km circuit of the walls on bicycle at sunset. An absolutely unmissable Souss-Massa experience.

The Soul of Souss-Massa

The Amazigh people — Morocco's indigenous Berber population — have inhabited the Souss-Massa for thousands of years. Their language Tachelhit, their music, their architecture, their cuisine and their relationship with the land form the invisible thread connecting every village, valley and coastline in this region. Atlaseia's inbound programme is built to make this culture visible, accessible and fairly compensated.
